The Division of Licensing (DOL) requires that security guards must be licensed with the Class D License to provide unarmed security services in the State of Florida. To become a security officer students must complete the 40 Hour D course. The security guard class must be completed in a security school (DS), licensed in Florida. The security course is administered by a licensed security instructor (DI). Students must pass the security certification test with a 75% or better and will receive a security course certificate, which is needed to apply to the DOL. Students must summit their D course application along with there 40 HR security D Course certificate, passport photo, fingerprint card and a State of Florida Fee of $87 to the DOL. The security D license is valid for a 2-year period and must be renewed 3 months before expiration date. The security guard must be employed by a licensed security agency.
The Division of Licensing (DOL) requires that armed security guards or private investigators (C/CC) working armed must have a Statewide Firearms Class G license. Armed security officers or private investigators must complete 28 Hrs of classroom and firearms training. Armed security students must pass a written test and the firearms range qualification to receive a G course firearms certificate. Students must be trained by a Florida licensed, Class K firearms instructor. Security officers armed and or private investigator can only carry a firearm while working on duty. Security officers armed must open carry unless working a temporary assigned duty in plain clothes. Armed security officers in the State of Florida can only carry a 9mm, .380 semi-automatic pistol, 357 and or .38 caliber revolver while on duty. The State Fee for the Florida license is $112 and the armed G license is valid for 2 years. YOU CANNOT WORK SECURITY ARMED WITH A CONCEALED FIREARMS LICENSE (CCW). The Concealed License is for personal carry only. Invictus does provide a concealed carry certificate upon completion of the G course. Armed security and investigator’s must complete a 4 hr recert each year of their G license to keep it current.
Example: Armed officer receives their G license January 10th 2011. They must complete 4 hours of training and shoot the firearms qualification course within the time frame of January 10th 2011-2012. The Armed Guard then must complete another 4 Hrs of firearms training within the time period of January 10th 2012-2013. The security officer then will summit the total of 8 hours of training with their G course renewal letter from the DOL. If the Armed officer misses the 4 Hr recertification within the time period of their license as described above they must retake entire 28Hr G course.
